The Story

Client Remodeling Goals

Our clients have been in their house since it was built and they felt like it was time to update the look of the kitchen. They decided to continue the update by redoing the staircase and mudroom, improving the basement for their teenagers, and updating the flooring on the first and second floors. Our primary objective was to create a fresh look for a family that enjoys entertaining.

Design Vision

Built in 2001, the house was in excellent condition, so there was little need for anything other than re-crafting a few spaces and cosmetic improvements. Our design included updating the main staircase and opening up the back hall, laundry, and the kitchen by repositioning and shrinking an obtrusive powder room. Doing this created the space for a much desired coffee bar off to the side of the main kitchen. With the enlarged kitchen, the island could also be expanded for more seating and storage.

Combining the mudroom and laundry room doubled the floor space for both areas and will save steps when coming in from the garage with muddy clothing. Another solution we provided was a multi-compartment storage unit, which included a live-edge walnut bench, cubbies below for shoes, hooks for coats, and a tall cabinet for much-needed storage.

The teenagers, having grown the need for a more private area to hang out, were provided a space in the newly finished basement. For entertaining, a wet bar was considered a necessity for the family. To tie the bar design in with the first floor, another live-edge walnut piece was used. In addition, a guest bedroom and bathroom were added. Windows were enlarged in the guest bedroom for egress purposes, and when the barn doors are opened they bring daylight into the hangout space.

Other design decisions that may seem minor but have a major impact include adding a pocket door to the powder room, which helps keep the size of the room at a minimum. New prefinished wood floors on the first and second levels adds a degree of sophistication, giving the maturing house a new look. Finally, using geometric shapes and colors throughout the house through moves like patterned shower accent wall created a style unique to the family.
