So You Want A Master Suite or Bathroom Television? Get The Facts

Consider Adding a Bathroom Television When Remodeling a Master Suite

As more of us are opting to take “stay-cations” homeowners who remodel their homes want a relaxing environment with luxurious amenities like outdoor kitchens and living areas, home theaters, and spa-like master suite bathrooms. Having a bathroom television is a recent trend here in Ann Arbor.

Today, the top home remodel, second only to the kitchen, is the creation of spa-like en suite retreat. From amenities like radiantly heated floors and heated towel racks to luxurious stone finishes, huge glass shower enclosures featuring multiple remote controlled shower heads, and large soaking tubs, the focus is on creating the spa experience in your own home. One amenity that's been trending upwards in the past several years is putting a television in the master bath but is a bathroom television practical?

Installing a TV in the en suite has become more than simply a luxury. Imagine relaxing in your large soaking tub with a glass of wine and your favorite movie at the end of a long stressful day or catching the news in the morning while you prepare for work. All of us spend a considerable amount of time in the bathroom every day, so installing a TV in the bathroom can be practical! TV's can be wall mounted, hidden in a cabinet, or even placed behind a mirror.

We've installed a lot of TV's for homeowners and the three most frequently asked questions we're asked by clients considering adding bathroom television are:

How big should a bathroom television be?

The first thing to determine is where your TV will live. Consider where you will be viewing from, for example will you watch while shaving in the morning to check the stock prices or are you more likely to view it while soaking in the tub.  Remember to keep the size of the TV  proportional to the space and other features in the bathroom. If you're considering placing your TV in the shower or bathtub enclosure, speak with your designer to help you choose the correct size.

What features should a bathroom television have?

Make sure your TV comes with a wireless remote and is rated to operate at higher temperatures. Many new “smart” TVs feature internet access which can not only stream movies while you're in the tub, but can save time in the morning by allowing you to check emails while you prepare for your day.

Are there any concerns with installing a TV in the bathroom?

The main concern is moisture and spills. Make sure you place your TV away from water and that you use a waterproof covering for additional protection. One great option is a mirror TV. It's a very thin device that is hidden within the mirror. It appears as a mirror when the lights are on, but when turned off, the TV can be viewed.

Choosing the right bathroom television to meet your needs

Do your research before buying anything. Speak with your designer and design build contractor, conduct online research and see what's available. Ask and answer these questions before you begin shopping for a bathroom television. Consider:

Your budget

What are you willing to spend? Set a budget before you begin shopping.  Setting a budget early can narrow your choices.

What will you watch?

Today you can purchase TVs with built in DVD players, CD players, radios, internet connectivity and more. Will you be watching movies? Stream Netflix, or buy a set with a built in DVD player.

Measure your space and consider your décor.

A TV that's too large will look wrong, as can an exposed TV in a traditional or country bathroom. Consider the size of your set as well as options like a mirror TV, or a set hidden in a cabinet.

What features are important?

Make a wishlist. What features are important to you? Think about what size is right for your space and how much weight your walls can hold. If you need a waterproof remote (highly recommended) you may need to pay extra.

Compare, Check Prices Online and Demo

Do your due diligence! Check consumer reports, read online reviews at Amazon and other online sites. Prices can range widely depending on the brand and feature set. Compare the major brands and make sure any store you purchase from offers a liberal service plan and good customer support after the sale. Visit big box stores and specialty electronics stores when you've narrowed your choices and demo them. See them in person and try before you buy!

Installing a TV in the bathroom is no longer considered a luxury. In fact, bathroom TVs are more common than you might think. Whether you're looking to save time by checking your email as you get ready for work, or love to relax in the tub with a glass of wine and an old movie, installing a bathroom TV is affordable and will add to your relaxation and enjoyment.
