Our No-Stress Guide to Staying Home During Your Remodel Project

One of the biggest concerns many homeowners have before committing to a remodel project is: Can I stay in my home while the remodel takes place? Which is usually followed by If I do stay, how will that experience be? We hear you - It makes total sense!

Your home is your sanctuary, the hub of all of your activity. It’s where you work, relax and take care of all your family essentials. But don’t let the fear of inconvenience put off a remodel that could transform your life and maximize the joy you feel in your home. With the right plan in place, you can stay in your home and get that updated space you’ve been longing for.

Before any project begins, we’ll help you plan out a strategy. That might involve letting you know ahead of time if there will be days where you’ll need to be away from the house. This could be due to off-gassing of flooring that’s just been laid or because the water supply will be turned off for a day or two. We’ll let you know with as much notice as possible so you can plan to make accommodations nearby, or perhaps schedule a trip to avoid certain aspects of the remodel. We believe in transparency and great communication with our clients, and we accomplish this by the utilization of technology. We keep the homeowner up to date on every aspect of the project, which allows for smart and rational decision making.

Where You Remodel Determines Your Stay-at-Home Plan

Every remodeling project is as unique as the family who lives in the home. So, we take an individual approach to your project. That said, there are some projects that require less preparation than others. A spare bedroom, bathroom, or a mudroom renovation, for instance, probably won’t affect your daily activities. You may have a hard-working crew in your home, but it won’t keep you from using the bathroom or cooking in the kitchen. However, if you remodel includes multiple rooms or if it puts an essential bathroom or your kitchen out of commission, some planning will need to happen.

Strategies to Stay Sane During a Major Remodel

Consider Kids and Pets

Young children who need quiet environments might need a less disruptive environment. Similarly, pets may need to be relocated during a remodel.

Schedule Ahead

If you’re going down to one bathroom, it’s a good idea to plot out a shower/bath schedule to avoid gridlock at the bathroom and frantic commutes.

Kitchen Remodel Rescues

If your kitchen will be out of commission, a makeshift mini kitchen can make staying at home feasible. On a portable table, set up a coffee maker, toaster oven and microwave. Ask your team if your old refrigerator can be temporarily relocated out of the construction zone. Prep meals which can be easily heated and resort to disposable plates and utensils to make life simpler. Examine what camping supplies you have which may come in handy. Don’t forget to reward yourself with plenty of takeout and pizza deliveries!

Organization is Key

Clear storage bins can be used to pack up items that you’ll frequently use. Store bathroom or kitchen items for easy access to save time searching for essentials.

Your Comfort, Health and Safety are Our Priority

While there are some steps you can take to make life easier during a remodel, we do everything that we can to make the process safe and streamlined for you. We use dust walls and dust protection. A dust wall isn’t just plastic sheets taped to a doorway. Our dust walls are solid pressure fitted dust walls that completely separate a dusty workspace from a living space. This not only protects the rest of your home, but it also removes any visual anxiety a remodeling project may create.

Our team has plenty of experience in completing remodeling projects while our clients have remained in their homes. You can feel comfortable to ask us any questions and we’ll be happy to guide you through the process.
